After weeks of hot weather, it has now turned colder and wetter and when we arrive at Beachclub Copacabana, I decide to sit inside, where the fireplaces are on. As per usual, we arrive by bike, and this is still very much to Billie Stormzy's delight: he loves sitting on his little seat attached to the steering wheel, humming along, watching the trafic and waving his arms.
It's a momentous day: Billie Stormzy has said his first word. In fact, I even managed to catch it on camera because after saying it once, he kept saying it, tasting its sounds with his mouth, trying out different intonations: "ball". It was intentional, because he was holding a ball and looking at it while he said it. It's not so strange that this is his first word: he loves balls, he loves playing with them, throwing them, crawling after them when we throw them for him.
Copacabana is a delight - always has been. Boasting one of the most beautiful buildings at the Scheveningen beach (I can only think of Barbarossa when trying to come up with something that comes even close), a beautifully designed square wooden structure surrounded by pleasantly decorated terraces, all in light blue, yellow and faded red- the colours of the beach. Inside, it's all shells and potted plants hanging from the ceiling. Jack Johnson (whose accoustic soft rock is a favourite at the Scheveningen beach clubs) is playing on the soundsystem and Billie Stormzy starts rocking to the music when we enter.
We sit down at a small low table in the corner, in a comfy smoking chair. I order the set breakfast and give Billie Stormzy his 10 o'clock bottle. Afterwards, Billie Stormzy is content with sitting in my lap, but after a while he gets restless. So I give him a ball and put him on the floor, where he's delighted to play with his ball, hitting it so that it rolls away, then chasing after it. He tires of that, too, though and starts trying to stand up, holding on to tables, and once he's upright he tries to catch stuff that's on the table: little potted plants, pepper and salt, menus.
When breakfast is brought, I switch to a higher table, so that it's easier to keep Billie Stormzy in check. The breakfast is nice: croissant, thick slices of bread, eggs, and assorted toppings. Two things set this breakfast apart from the standard fare: a slice of banana bread and a mackerel spread. The mackerel spread is nice and spicy and the banana bread is tasty; the rest of the breakfast is nice as well and reasonably priced at €11,90. What really makes Copacabana stand out, though, is the atmosphere - the place is chock full of laidback cool that makes it such a pleasant spot to hang out and while the time away.
