Café de la Paix Route 66

It's an early Thursday morning and most places are still closed. After a walk around La Marsa, we end up at the line of cafés facing the sea that also includes Café l'Opera, Fragola and Restaurant Fayruz. One of the few cafés that we haven't visited yet, is Café de la Paix Route 66, a bit of a strange affair mixing the air of a French provincial café with Americana, as the name would suggest. All around, there are fake street signs announcing that we are at the 'Place des Voisins Sympas", the "Place de l'Aminité" or the "Avenue de la Retraite Tranquille", while there are also American licence plates, Route 66 signs and even an entire petrol station.

While some of the other cafés already have busy terraces, this one is still quite quiet: apart from a couple, we are the only patrons.I order a café direct (basically a café latte), a banana milkshake for Rihanna Gaga and a chocolate pancake. As we wait for it, Gotye's horrible, horrible "Somebody that I used to know" is playing and we both try to ignore it. When a more uptempo song comes on, Rihanna Gaga starts to dance - she's got amazing moves these days, making oriantal gestures with her arms and hands and shaking her hips almost like in a bellydance. She is especially fond of deep house. We have no idea where she picked up these moves - the daycare seems likely, but she's also fascinated by music videos whenever she sees them in shopping malls or cafés. And she loves dancing. It's the only thing that she can do for a longer time than just 10 minutes. She could easily be persuaded to dance for 30 to 45 minutes these days, especially if the music is to her taste.

We drink the banana milkshake together - Rihanna Gaga insists that I share it with her by offering me the second straw. We also share the pancake, which she eats in between running around. We're enjoying our time together as I barely saw her the last three days since I was giving a workshop at the Enfidha Airport, in the south of Tunisia. And in four weeks, I'll be flying up and down between Tunisia and the Netherlands again, so we will not see each other as much as usual then either. So we much relish moments like these. Luckily, we have found a good babysitter whom Rihanna Gaga seems to like having around. While normally she's quite timid, she opened up to this Tunisian girl remarkably quickly, accepting that we left her in her care without crying. I suppose it's nice for her, because while her mum and I are often distracted - checking our mail, reading a book, doing household chores - the babysitter is really there for her. And it's a sweet, calm girl who gave Rihanna Gaga the time to get used to her.

When we're finished, I pay and we walk towards the road to hail a taxi. We're on our way to the university where I will work next year, to drop off the contract with my signature on it.
