For the second time, we're headed for the Northern beach. The original plan was to go to Boomerang Beach Club, but they're closed. In fact, all the more party-oriented beach clubs in this stretch of the Scheveningen beaches - Boomerang, Whoosah, Wow - seem to be closed this morning. So we walk on to one of my favourite beach clubs, Buiten. It's quite a long walk, even longer than usual, since we didn't leave from our home, but from the infant centre. Rihanna Gaga got her vaccins today. I'm quite proud of my daughter: she's a tough girl and hardly cried when she received her injections. The nurse was impressed by her, not only because how lightly she took the vaccination, but also because she showed off all her skills. But this is typicall for Rihanna Gaga: she likes to impress people and as soon as she meets a new person, she'll start to show off all her tricks.
She's vast asleep when we arrive at Buiten. The name is Dutch for Outside, presumably because this club is located so far away from the main boulevard. In fact, it is the second to last beach club on this stretch. The weather is quite warm, but the sky is very clouded, which gives this morning a bit of a tropical feel. I park Rihanna Gaga's stroller in front of one of the cosy corners next to the beach club and sit down on the couch. The place has an incredibly tranquile feeling, with wrought iron decoration, flower beds and a veranda-like structure in front of the main building. The furniture is mostly untreated wood, and inside there is a cozy fireplace and original art on the walls.
The vibe is a combination of hippy and surfer, incredibly cozy and friendly.
Apart from us, the only other guests are a young mother, her child and her father and their two dogs. As I sit down and relax, Rihanna Gaga is still sleeping. She continues to do so while I order a mint tea and breakfast. There is no set breakfast, but the breakfast menu is much more elaborate than in most beach clubs. I pick a croissant with scrambled eggs, onion and smoked salmon (€5,60). It doesn't take long to arrive and tastes really good.
As I sip my cappucino - since my visit to Bologna, I have changed my preference for espresso with a preference for cappucino - Rihanna Gaga finally wakes up. Even though the music certainly isn't her type (first they played the incredible Searching for Sugar Man Sountrack, then Nina Simone), she is in a very good mood. I feed her some fruit, then she spends a while playing around on the beach. A few months ago, she really didn't like the sand. Maybe her experience in Egypt in December, when she tried to eat a handful of sand was traumatic - but she seems to have forgotten about that now. She likes fooling around on the beach, letting her hands wave through the sand.
After a while, we decide to leave. The goofy, but friendly waiter plays with Rihanna Gaga while I pay and then we head home again. The skies are still looking quite threatening, but it won't start raining until later in the day.
