Mood Beach

The most surprising thing about Mood Beach is its location. It is situated at the most busy spot along the Scheveningen boulevard, right in front of the famous Kurhaus and yet it avoids the slickness that characterises most of the beach clubs around this place. Its neighbours are De Golfslag, with its smooth look of a professional restaurant, and party central Peukie, with its blue plastic Buddhas.  Squeezed in between these, Mood Beach  has instead opted for the laid back surfer vibe that is quite common for beach clubs located further away from the main Boulevard, but unique at this specific spot. Together with the fact that the beach club is smaller than most others around this place, this gives Mood Beach a very cozy atmosphere.

Rihanna Gaga immediately approves of the chill out music that oozes through the speakers: she sways to the rythm and smiles. After some consideration, I decide to sit outside. The weather is really quite warm this early April morning and we sit down on a couch overlooking the beach and, beyond that, the sea. We're a bit late - somehow, this day just didn't want to get started and it is almost 11 o'clock when we finally make it to the beach. It turns out this is a good thing, as we're told that the cook will only arrive after 11 o'clock, despite the fact that the menu announces that breakfast is served between 9 o'clock and 12.

This seems fair enough: apart from the two of us, the only visitors to the beach club this Monday morning are some pensionados, birds and later on a few acquaintances of the very friendly waitress. Oh, and two men who seem to be having a bussiness meeting and don't respond to the smiles Rihanna Gaga sends them, much to her chagrin. There are few things she dislikes as much as people who fail to pay attention to her. She tries waving and even shouting at the men, but they're absorbed in their conversation.

She can't complain about a lack of attention, though. The couch on which we're sitting is right along a path that runs parallel to the sea and that connects the beach clubs. Plenty of people pass by and almost all of them react to her waving and smiles. For a baby who likes attention as much as Rihanna Gaga does, this is really the place to be.

The beach club and its terrace are incredibly tastefully decorated: black, white and unpainted woodworks dominate, pots with plants are everywhere, as well as carved wooden decorations. The whole place seems steeped in tranquility and despite the fact that the hour is close to noon and the terrace looks out on the incredibly ugly Scheveningen Pier, it almost feels like we're having an early morning somewhere in the pacific. In fact, considering the chilled out atmosphere here, I find it a bit odd that Mood Beach offers so little opportunity to lounge: the low couch on which we're seated is only one of five or six couches, for the rest all seats are chairs and tables.

The menu offers three types of breakfast: A healthy breakfast, a regular breakfast and a deluxe breakfast. The latter includes Prosecco and because of the advanced hour, I cannot resist the temptation to add a touch of decadence to today's breakfast (€10,50). Although the parts that make up the rest of the breakfast - two slices of bread, fried egg, fresh orange juice, coffee, croissant, ham and cheese - are not particularly special, together they make up a meal that is very good value for money. I share some of the bread and orange juice with Rihanna Gaga, which cheers her up after having sulked for a bit because she cannot get the two men to react to her. As I sip my Prosecco, she continues to wave happily at passers by

If our morning was already quite lazy before we got to Mood Beach, the relaxed atmosphere there did little to change this. We pay and head off into Scheveningen's dunes for a long walk.
